Reading Around the Globe

*Under Construction* Please be patient with this page as I am still adding to it and editing it!

Before I visit a country I try to learn about their history and culture. One way I do this is by trying to read a book written by a local author. I think that each book gives me more insight into the culture of that country. Also when reading the books I have context for the cultures represented in them and the places they mention. While one book is not enough to truly understand a nation, my tradition of reading about each place allows me to better understand the history and customs. This page is meant to document the books that I have read so that others who plan on visiting these countries can learn about them before or after they visit. Also it is for those who cannot currently travel, as I believe that reading books allows us to travel anywhere in the world and hear stories from those we cannot meet.

Some of the books listed below are novels while others are nonfiction. Since starting this tradition of reading about the country before visiting, I’ve also started to pick up books from places I have not yet been, but that I’d love to go to. Those books appear on this list as well. The books are listed in alphabetical order of the author’s home country.

Cambodia: First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, Loung Ung

Singapore: Crazy Rich Asians, Kevin Kwan
